Some might not have even been aware of who he was before, but by now almost everyone has heard about the allegations surrounding billionaire Sean Combs, aka P. Diddy. The sheer cruelty and alleged scope of his abuse have made headlines worldwide, and as new details emerge nearly every day, the revelations have left many reeling. Some even avoid the topic altogether, unless it’s to make a “Thank you, Beyoncé” or “Baby Oil” joke. This is no ordinary scandal but a decades-long saga of cruelty, exploitation, and abuse that almost feels unreal.
The exploitation detailed in the suit spans over twenty years and is now raising serious questions about how social dynamics allow this kind of unchecked power to flourish. How is someone able to perpetuate this level of harm for so long, seemingly without consequence? The answer, of course, involves people’s compliance. Given the information we have so far, it seems obvious that many people were aware of his actions. The show Supernatural, for instance, made a throwaway line at his expense in one of their episodes, and Eminem directly accused him of being a rapist and implicated him in Tupac Shakur’s death in his 2018 song “Killshot.”
